    HISTORIC CORTEZ TOWNSITE

Looking down from the Tenabo Mill, the Cortez townsite is at the left.  Dumps from at the modern Cortez Mines are seen in the distance.

One of the more complete frame houses in the Cortez ghost town was occupied through 1930s.

The self-appointed “Caretaker” of Cortez lived in this house until the 1960s.

Vandalism has toppled what was once one of the nicest homes in the town.

Chinese workers were brought in by Simeon Wenban in the 1870s to replace the Cornish miners. They lived in this area of Cortez.

Few remains of the Chinese dwellings exist but artifacts can still be found such as this broken porcelain rice bowl.

Several ruins of adobe houses dot the Cortez landscape. The roof structure can still be seen in this ruin.

The doorway of this substantial adobe house still stands.

The town cemetery is thought to contain around 50-60 graves. Many are unmarked.

Mining and ranching families still tend the graves of family members.
