After a full morning of exploring the many sites in Fayette, the MHAers gathered for a delicious catered lunch in the Hotel.
After lunch the MHAers were free to see more of Fayette. For many it was time to say “so long” for another year and to start their journeys home.

A Side Trip to Gwinn, Michigan,
A 1906 Planned Company Mining Community

(Left) A short detour on the way to or from Fayette takes you to Gwinn, Michigan.  As the historical marker describes, Gwinn is a completely planned model mining community designed by noted Boston landscape architect, Warren H. Manning, for the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Mining Company.  The town included modern utilities, a school, hospital, recreation center, swimming pool, churches, and a railroad station.  It was named for the mother of William Gwinn Mather, Cliffs’ President.

(Above) Although the mines closed in 1947, 41 years after the town was built, Gwinn’s tree-lined streets and modest houses still reflect the founders’ vision.

The town center of Gwinn with its matching buildings and city park sits quietly in the early morning hours.  The mining industry has moved on to other locations and a nearby Air Force Base has closed and been converted to a small regional airport. However, Gwinn still retains an attractive residential character.
