Galena was a center of silver mining in the northern Black Hills in the late 1800s.  This quiet valley once roared with the 24/7 sound of stamp mills.

A display of historic photos and other documents give a glimpse into Galena’s heyday.  A survey map of the town cemetery is included.

Our host describes more of the history of Galena when it was bustling with mines and mills.

With a little persistence, one can still find a few remains of the buildings occupied by the miners.  This one warrants close inspection.

Inside looking out.  The original log structure appears to have had an “addition,” perhaps for reuse as a garage.

Outside looking in.  Note the roofing “shingles” made from scrap metal.

Apparently, they decided that The Lodge at Deadwood would offer better accommodations for the night.

The bus awaits our departure from the historic mining town of Galena and the end of the tour.
