The Annual Mining History Association Awards Banquet celebrates the
recipients of the 2024 MHA Awards.This year’s featured speaker was Nate Foster, Managing Director, Rio
Tinto Kennecott.
Dana Bennett, MHA President,
introduced the Featured Banquet Speaker, Nate Foster, Managing Director,
Rio Tinto Kennecott.
Nate Foster presented a talk and video
on “Rio Tinto Kennecott, 120 Years Proud and a Brighter Future to Come.” A
lively question and answer session followed his talk.
(left) Brian Leech, Chair of the Research Grants Committee, announced
the 2024 awardees: Dennis Patrick Halpin,
Associate Professor at Virginia Tech University; Ernest Sewordor,
Postdoc, Department of History, University of Basel; Benjamin Shultz,
PhD Candidate, University of Texas at El Paso; and Katherine (Kari)
Thomas, Ph.D. student at Carnegie
Mellon University.
(Above) Michael G. Nelson, Professor
Emeritus of Mining Engineering, University of Utah, receives the John
Livermore Award from Peter Maciulaitis, Chaiman of the Livermore Award
Committee.At the conclusion
of the conference Dr. Nelson also received the
Keith Long Best
Presentation Award for his presentation, "Smelters and Smelter Smoke in
Utah."

Mining History Journal, announces the winner of the John Townley
Award for the best paper in the 2023 Volume.The awardee is
Mark Aldrich, "Conserving Resources, Saving Lives: Strip Mining Coal in
America, 1880-1945."
(Above) Bob Spude, Chair of Besleme-Orell Heritage Award Committee,
presents the 2024 Award to the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History,
for their work to preserve historic mine sites and their promotion of

Ed Raines, Chair of the Ed Hunter Distinguished Service Award Committee,
presents the 2024 Award to Mark and Lynn Langenfeld for their tireless
efforts in organizing several MHA conferences including this year’s
conference in Park City.
