A SURPRISE ATTRACTION
The Cornish Pump and Mine Museum had an interesting, non-mining surprise ready for the MHAers, a World War II era CG-4A Glider (shown below with Dawn). During the War, the Ford Motor Company manufactured over 4,000 of these unpowered gliders at its plant in Kingsford, MI, just outside of Iron Mountain. With a wingspan of 83.5 feet and a length of 48 feet, each glider could carry a payload of 7,500 pounds (13 soldiers or military equipment). Gliders were used in numerous engagements from 1942-1945, including the D-Day Invasion of Normandy in June of 1944.
