Our tour bus receives an escort as it drives into the active mining area.
The mine overlook provides an excellent view of the mining operations.
A fleet of Caterpillar front-end loaders and large haul trucks transport the broken ore and waste rock to its destination. The ore is crushed before it is placed on a leach pad.
In the foreground, a pattern of blast holes is being drilled. In the rear, waste material in placed in an abandoned open pit.
This close-up view shows the waste material being used to fill a worked-out pit.
When mining has stopped in an area, it is reclaimed with a cover of vegetation.
It is time for last minute questions before we board the bus.
As we leave the mine, we pass the Terry Peak Ski Area, located at the end of Nevada Gulch, just south of the Coeur-Wharf Mine.
