(Above) View of the entrance plaza of the Vulcan Center which houses the Museum.  The plaza represents the geology of the area and the iron formation (thin red line) on Red Mountain where the Center is located.

(Right) “The Material of Success,” wall display at the museum entrance portrays the many facets of the metalworking industry in and around Birmingham.

Large display with examples of the raw materials, iron ore, limestone, coal and coke, and the final product, pig iron.

Life-size images of the diverse population of mine and metal workers from Birmingham’s industries.

Various models of the Vulcan statue tell the story of its design and creation for the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.

Pat poses for scale next to a full-sized model of Vulcan’s right foot.  The full cast iron statue is 56 feet tall and weighs 120,000 pounds.

Sculptor, Giuseppi Moretti’s model of Vulcan’s head.

Close-up view of the model of Vulcan.  His metalworker’s apron with his exposed derrière  have been the source of many “moon” local jokes.
